What are the advantages of having my skulls cleaned with dermestid beetles?
Dermestid beetles are highly efficient at removing all flesh and soft tissue from bone. In fact it is the most preferred methods used by museums and universities. The beetle larvae are able to remove meat from the smallest holes in the skull without causing any damage to the bone. The finished skulls do not have any unpleasant odors due to flesh remaining in the skull, nasal cavities remain intact, and no shrinkage occurs.
Why a European Mount?
European mounts are becoming more and more popular. They are both unique and attractive. They are also less expensive than traditional head or shoulder mounts.
How long will it take to clean my skulls?
First understand that each skull is different and finishing times will vary. A lot of this depends on species, age, and diet. The majority of skulls will be finished within 3 to 4 months. Also, at certain times of the year an increase in volume of orders may slow the process. We make every effort to process your skulls as promptly as possible, while providing the highest quality finished product.
Do I have to pay a deposit when I bring in/ship my skulls?
No. We do not charge a deposit to have your skulls cleaned. We will contact you for payment once your skulls are finished and ready to be shipped or picked up. However, you may pay up front if you prefer.
Why do my skulls need to be degreased?
Degreasing is the most important step in preparing a high quality finished skull. If the time is not taken to remove all of the grease and fat from inside the bone, it will eventually come to the surface causing dark spots or yellowing.
Do you put anything on the skulls when they are finished?
Yes. After your skull has been degreased and whitened, a sealer is applied to protect it from the environment and make cleaning easier. We offer either a matte or satin finish.
Are horns and/or bottom jaws attached when I get my skull back?
Horns and bottom jaws are not attached unless you request that we attach them. Some species (herbivores) will not have the bottom jaws cleaned and returned unless requested (additional charges apply). With horned animals, the horns are removed prior to cleaning and are returned with the skull. They will easily slide back onto the skull. We will also do open jaw displays on carnivores if requested (additional charges apply).
How do I know the skull I receive is mine?
When we receive your head for cleaning, a non-removable banding ID will be attached. Each band is number stamped and the number is recorded on your work order.
Are there any additional charges other than what is listed?
No additional fees, other than shipping will be charged for regular cleaning, degreasing, whitening and sealing. If additional work is requested, such as attaching horns, cleanining bottom jaws (herbivores), or open jaw displays (carnivores) additional charges will apply.
